We have many varieties of gantry cranes for different weight loads – all come with heavy-duty frame design with square tubing uprights, knee braces, and channel base. Most have some sort of moving mechanism, castors, for example, to facilitate moving the crane to where it is needed such as above a vehicle.

We have many gantry cranes to choose from for different weight loads – all come with heavy-duty frame design with square tubing uprights, knee braces, and channel base. We also have aluminium gantry cranes that significantly reduce the weight of the crane.

Crane Knowledge
Building cranes that are stationary and are bolted to the floor are called freestanding cranes. To be a gantry crane the entire crane must be mobile and are typically on castors or wheels. Workstation cranes are cranes that service specific work area of the shop (including jib, freestanding overhead building cranes, and gantry cranes).

Definition, Applications, and Use

Gantry cranes are a type of crane used to straddle an object or workspace. They are also called portal cranes, the “portal” being the empty space straddled by the gantry. Some workstation gantry cranes are equipped with an enclosed track while others use an I-beam for the running surface. Most gantry cranes are intended to be stationary when loaded, and mobile when unloaded. Gantry cranes primarily provide vertical and lateral lifting capabilities wherever it is positioned, think up and to the side, whereas overhead cranes provide both vertical and horizontal moving capabilities within a specific area. Workstation gantry cranes can be outfitted with either a wire rope hoist or a chain hoist dependent on your material lifting needs.

Gantry cranes are typically used in smaller repair shops, some manufacturing facilities, and in some agricultural implement applications. Mobility is the biggest benefits of these types of cranes while heavier and frequent production type of loads are best moved with overhead cranes. So if you’re looking for a lifting solution for multiple points in your facility a gantry crane may be your best option.
