Balancers lighten the load during operations.

Balancers are the muscle of lifting systems geared towards tool handling for operators and are the most integral part of the system. Choosing wisely for your needs will go a long way towards increasing production speed. That’s why we offer the most extensive line of balancers of any provider in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC.

Balancers are commonly used for tool manipulation versus product handling. Tools such as heavier drills can cause operator fatigue after a long day of use. A balancer removes the lifting of the tool away from the operator and allows them to focus on the task versus handling the tool.

If you are manipulating a heavy tool often in your work cell, a balancer may be right for you. Balancers are designed to hold a specific weight item in a “floating” mode. If the load matches the balancer than the object doesn’t move unless directed to by the operator. If the load is heavier than what the balancer is rated for it sinks, if it’s lighter, it rises. Balancers are very good at making tools “lighter” (by removing the operator’s need to lift the tool) and make tools easier to manipulate.

Checklist of Considerations

Here are some considerations when selecting a lifting device:

  • Capacity: The maximum weight it can handle,
  • Lift: How far are you moving the load,
  • Speed of the lift – how fast do you need to move the product,
  • Incoming power source and the control voltage,
  • Pendant control cable length or remote control capabilities needed,
  • Suspension: How is it suspended? How is the crane supported?
  • Type of trolley: Plain, geared or motorized,
  • Type of beam the hoist or air balancer will run on.

 

What is the difference between Air and Spring Balancers?

Air balancers use compressed air to power the lift while spring balancers use an internal spring to lift (or balance) the load. Watch this video to see a balancer in action with a heavy drill. Generally, air balancers are for heavier lifting requirements than a spring balancer and need an air system in place. Spring balancers are self-contained, need no power or air, but lack the features and the versatility of air balancers. Selecting the right balancer will go a long ways towards optimal efficiency, so ask your Acculift representative which balancer would work best for your specific task.

Basic (B) Series

Ingersoll Rand (B) Series (Zimmerman) Balancers come standard with no controls, and are designed for integration with an end effector or handling device that includes a control package. The robust design of these pneumatic balancers gives you continuous duty cycle with minimal maintenance. “B” Series air balancers are built to enhance your productivity, with stronger and more efficient lifting.

Features

DURABILITY: Balancers feature all-steel housing, engineered plastic, aircraft grade wire rope and self-closing cast safety hook.

RELIABILITY: Features include precise positioning, a pre-lubricated piston chamber, intuitive speed control, and continuous duty operation.

SAFETY:

  • Standard emergency cable retract brakes mean that if your load is accidentally lost, a spring-loaded centrifugal brake automatically stops the rapid upward cable travel.
  • If the air supply is ever interrupted, the unit will maintain the load in the suspended position.
  • The load being lifted can never exceed the unit’s maximum rated capacity at a given air pressure, providing intrinsic overload protection.
  • The optional Z-stop eliminates the down-drift of suspended loads within 6 inches (152 mm) if air supply is shut down.

PRODUCTIVITY: Gain flexibility, with ultra-low air consumption, clean oil free operation, and cable travels of up to 120 inches depending on the model.

  • Suspension kits are available for virtually all enclosed track manufacturers, as well as I-beam, Patented/Hardened track, and Hook mounted configurations.
  • Standard Z-Servo control (BA balancers over 200 lb., or 90.7 kg) amplifies the inputs and reduces the effort required to lift the load.

Balance Air (BA) Series

Ingersoll Rand (BA) Series (Zimmerman) pneumatic balancers have no pendant controls and are used for single-load suspending applications – either at a fixed height or where both hands are used to manually raise, lower, and position (or “float”) a load. The operator experiences virtually no part weight or resistance in manipulating the load. The controller on this air balancer is a self-relieving regulator that automatically adds or exhausts air to raise or lower (float) the load to the desired height where it will remain suspended. The regulator can also be adjusted to slowly raise a load up and out of an operator’s way. The primary application for the “BA” series balancer is for suspending and/or positioning constant weight items.

Equal Air (EA) Series

Ingersoll Rand Equal Air (EA) Series (Zimmerman) Balancers are used for handling multiple (up to 3) loads within a 40 lb. (18.1 kg) weight range without the need to adjust the controls. When the pendant is in the LO- and UN-LOAD position, balancer air pressure is released to allow the lighter loads to be in balance. When the pendant is in the HI-LOAD position, no pressure is released, and the heaviest load can be balanced. These pneumatic balancers are ideally suited for applications where up to 3 load sizes are frequently lifted, and operator hands-on the part is required. The UN-LOAD position is also often used for handling device balancing (loaded/unloaded).

Zim Air (ZA) Balancer

Ingersoll Rand Zim Air (ZA) Series Balancers (Zimmerman) are the most common air balancer/control combination, designed for high-speed, precision handling of variable weight loads. Up/down movement is accomplished through the use of an ergonomically designed pendant with low-effort, colour-coded thumb levers. After positioning the load with the pendant control, the unit defaults into a balanced load condition that allows the operator up to 18 inches (457 mm) of travel to manually adjust the load for final positioning.
