Improving Safety and Efficiency at Powersmiths

The CHALLENGE

The journey towards a new material handling solution began when Acculift’s account executive Kevin Steen visited Powersmiths. During this visit he shared details and pictures of previous installations, including a work station crane that immediately captured the interest of the Powersmiths team.

Previously, Powersmiths utilized individual hoists for each of their twenty production machines, which resulted in inefficiencies and safety concerns. Each hoist was dedicated to a specific machine, restricting workflow flexibility and making operations less efficient. Additionally, low-clearance hoists positioned above workstations presented safety hazards for workers. Finally, managing multiple pieces of lifting equipment adds to maintenance demands, increasing downtime.

Inspired by the work station crane solution, Powersmiths began discussions with Acculift to explore creating a more efficient and scalable lifting system.

The SOLUTION

Acculift assessed Powersmiths’ operations and recommended a custom-designed work station crane system to replace the multiple hoists previously used. This solution provided several key benefits, significantly improving safety, productivity, and maintenance efficiency.

Enhanced Safety: The new system created a safer work environment for operators by eliminating low-clearance obstacles and reducing manual handling risks. With improved clearance and better load control, the risk of workplace accidents was significantly reduced.

Increased Productivity: The work station crane improved productivity by allowing operators to load and unload materials more efficiently. Previously, relying on multiple dedicated hoists restricted workflow, but the new system enabled seamless load transfers between machines. As a result, the same product could be worked on continuously down the production line without needing to be loaded and unloaded at each manufacturing stage.

Simplified Maintenance: The solution also simplified equipment maintenance. A single work station crane now serviced multiple production machines, reducing the number of individual hoists that needed to be maintained. The custom crane was designed for durability and low maintenance, ensuring long-term reliability while improving operator efficiency and ergonomics.

The RESULTS

After implementing the new system, Powersmiths noted immediate improvements. Operators reported reduced physical strain and an overall improvement in workplace safety. The workflow efficiency increased, leading to a noticeable boost in overall productivity. Tasks that once took significant time due to inefficiency were now completed more efficiently, allowing Powersmiths to exceed production goals.

While the initial investment for the work station crane was higher than maintaining individual hoists, long-term benefits—like improved safety, reduced maintenance, and enhanced operational efficiency—made it a worthwhile investment.
