Rockford Engineering – maximizes floor space for lifting

Based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Rockford Engineering provides an entire range of engineering services to meet all of their clients’ needs including project management, equipment supply, fabrication, installations, procurement, and industrial and mechanical engineering.

The CHALLENGE

Rockford Engineering had an existing building that they wanted to utilize for their assembly plant. Two requirements of the shop were a hook height of 13′ 6″ and bottom of runway height of at least 14′. With a roof height of 16′ 8″ and side-entrance overhead doors, the two requirements were in conflict with each other. Adding to this challenge two 5 Ton capacity bridges were required to be used individually and simultaneously to perform their required tasks.

The RESULT

Acculift designed a top running single girder bridge crane to fit within the area and provide the required lifting capabilities. The heavy, stooled down, single girder bridge design allowed for a maximum underside of runway height of 14′ 3.5″. Heavy beams with less height were used to provide a max bottom hook height of 13′ 7.75″. Columns were strategically placed to be unobtrusive to work areas maintaining maximum crane coverage. Rockford Engineering ended up with a 10 Ton free-standing structure with two 5 Ton capacity bridges that exceeded their lifting requirements while staying within their budget.

An UPDATE

A year later, Rockford Engineering is expanding this work bay and crane system to increase its capabilities. They are removing a wall and extending this modular workstation into the adjacent building to provide complete crane coverage of their production and research facility.
